In 1892, through the support of local residents, a donation was made for the town to establish a public cemetery.  In 1900, one of the town’s founders, Lemuel North Wilcox, deeded 3.3 acres to the town establishing Tryon Cemetery. The cemetery design exploited the curves and hills of the terrain.

In 1923 the town established a Cemetery Commission to preserve and protect the beauty and history of the cemetery. Originally the commission collected funds through a local tax. The taxing authority was suspended in 1941 and was not resumed after the war. Currently the cemetery receives support from the Town’s annual budget as well as a grant from the Mary F. Kessler Fund at the Polk County Community Foundation.
